History
From 1951 through 1985, the firm thrived under the leadership of two Notkins - James B. and his nephew, Benjamin S. Notkin. After Ben moved to Oahu to launch a new project in 1981, Tom Ferlan and John Rowland acquired ownership in 1986 when the firms separated and renamed the Seattle office to Notkin Engineering, Inc. Since then, Notkin has continued to thrive under a reputation for integrity, quality and excellence. In 1997, Sandy Bonderman and Larry Swartz bolstered Notkin's third generation of leaders, followed by Mark Leinenwever in 2004.
Notkin is in a growth mode, adding staff and project backlog with clients in selected markets and on large, high profile projects with complex systems design. The firm relocated from Seattle's Belltown neighborhood in May 2004 to the Metropolitan Park West building on Olive Way. The firm grew from 16 to 36 employees in less than two years and continues to thrive with clients ranging from Alaska to California and New York. The scale, scope and location of Notkin projects have varied throughout the firm's history ranging from municipal and commercial buildings, hospitals and laboratories, museums and performance halls, and educational and military facilities.
