Roosevelt High School Modernization, Seattle, WA
Owner: Seattle School District
Client/Architect: Bassetti Architects
Completion: 2006

During this modernization, the historic 1922 and 1928 buildings were renovated. A new building houses a gymnasium and physical education facilities, commons and a 750-seat performing arts center with orchestra pit.

While the existing school’s interiors were gutted to provide a better learning environment, historical elements were retained. At the heart of the renovation was the relocation of the library to the former auditorium space. New technology enhances the learning environment with access to ceiling-mounted projectors, DVD players, VCRs, and interactive white boards in the classrooms. The new performing arts theater, bolstered by world-class acoustics, provides an exciting new venue for the nationally acclaimed drama department and jazz band.

Efficient mechanical systems supply heating and ventilation to support the revitalized school with the majority of classrooms on a zoned heat recovery system through 100% outside air.
