Everett Community College Whitehorse Hall,
Everett, WA
Owner: Everett Community College
Client/Architect: LMN Architects
Completion: 2006
This new 86,330 sq. ft. building houses chemistry, organic, physics and physical sciences labs; a ceramics studio with kilns; art studios and classrooms; and journalism, graphic design, and photography classrooms collocated with the campus newspaper offices.
This is the first building in a $150 million, ten-year campus expansion plan and demonstrates dramatic changes in educational programming to benefit the community. Science laboratory and lecture areas are combined to enhance hands-on learning. Large art studios allow instructors to work separately with students of varying abilities, and outdoor ceramic and sculpture work areas provide space for public demonstrations. While natural light is prevalent throughout, art studios were intentionally located on the perimeter to take advantage with floor-to-ceiling windows. At the request of students and staff, a formal study area as well as informal meeting areas are scattered throughout the facility.
