Stadium High School Renovation, Tacoma, WA
Owner: Tacoma School District
Client/Architects: Krei Architecture and Bassetti Architects
Completion: 2006
Originally intended to be a hotel for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and Tacoma Land Company, this historical landmark was reborn as a high school in 1906, containing four floors of classrooms, a library and auditorium, and three basement floors that house a dining hall, gymnasium and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The campus was comprised of three buildings totaling 188,000 sq. ft., each with an independent mechanical system.
The renovation work included significant changes for classroom, administrative, corridor and specialty spaces to accommodate the needs of 1,900 students. Space reconfiguration to conform to contemporary teaching methods and technology required replacement of all mechanical, elevator, electrical, security and data systems. A new cafeteria and commons were constructed inside the gymnasium building and the pool was renovated. The 75,000 sq. ft.addition provides an expanded gymnasium and 450-seat performing arts building.
